Letter from Father of a soldier
Dear Rose,
Our 19 year old son is currently serving with the REME attached to the 1st battalion
light infantry. His battlegroup is due to head out to Al Almarah, Iraq early
next month (April).
As this date approaches we find ourselves full of fear and
trepidation. It very often seems that nobody knows how we feel apart from immediate
family. The other night my wife found our daughter reading an account of the
death of a young British soldier in Iraq both of them ended up crying.
We pray
to god that we will never feel the pain that you have suffered, and hope for
the safe return of our son. The only way to make sure this happens is to get
our troops out. Nobody should be praying that our child be spared when the headline
on the morning news reads British soldier
dies in Iraq.
After reading your account of your son Gordon's tragic death and your subsequent
battle for answers, we now realise that we are not alone in feeling that nobody
cares for our sons and daughters. I sometimes feel that this government cares
more for the fundamentalists and their rights, than protecting our servicemen/women
with the best available equipment.
We would liked to have come on the march planned for March 18th, but we are going
away for a week as we don't feel we be able to enjoy a holiday when our son is
in Iraq.
We will join the next march and hopefully will see you there.
God Bless you and yours
